Manufacturer Provided Description
Based on the hull form and specifications of the N72, the simple goal of the 78 was to create a small superyacht which was true to the rugged ocean going heritage of other Nordhavns while at the same time stunning in her elegance, fit and finish, systems and engineering. An interior decorator was commissioned to up the degree of style most megayachts are known for – including crown moldings, granite, leather, well-engineered lighting, and the finest appliances. Though a little more glitzy, there’’s no denying that a Nordhavn exists at the heart of this boat.

Specifications
Layout/Design DetailsThe cockpit opens directly to the main salon, which is outfitted with beautiful light cherry woodwork, custom tan carpeting, granite countertops and custom window treatments. A large L-shaped settee and varnished, oversized hi/low table are located aft to port. This settee has off-white cushions, covering large storage spaces. The oversized table adjusts to form a double bed (complete with fitted cushions) and also can be adjusted to provide the perfect distance from the settee to meet the needs of adults and grandchildren alike. Adjacent and to starboard are two, high-end, tan Ekornes “Stressless” chairs/ottomans. Fixed-mounted fans provide additional air circulation, if needed, on still evenings. Port and starboard cabinets provide additional storage. The salon is outfitted with a 42″ flat screen TV, a surround sound system and Direct TV/DVD entertainment. This entertainment system also controls speakers mounted in the cockpit, pilothouse and on the flybridge. Broadband internet and satellite TV capable, Cathexis permits real-world connectivity. The galley will remind you of home, complete with a Sub-Zero refrigerator, GE microwave/convection oven, gas cooktop, full-sized electric oven, double sink, pantry, plenty of cabinet space, granite countertops, custom backsplash and a beautiful slate-tile floor. Excellent for extended cruising and liveaboards.Step down from the galley into a laundry/utility room, complete with its full-sized washer and dryer, chest freezer, stainless steel countertop/work area and storage drawers/cabinets. The stairway has removable steps, allowing full access to the large starboard stabilizer space.

Aft of the laundry/utility room is the entrance to the engine room. With stand-up headroom, heavy duty stainless handrails and outboard mirrored stainless panels, underway engine checks are a dream. The twin, side-by-side Lugger engines are forward in this space, with the Northern Lights generator, 40 gallon water heater, dive compressor (with remote air intake) and full sized tool chest aft. The Arid bilge system dries the bilge, even while underway.

Continuing aft, you come to the lazarette (also accessible from the cockpit via an electronic lift system). This is a large space which houses the battery panel, inverter/chargers, ASEA power converter and HVAC; as well as easy access to aft mechanical equipment. The lazarette provides ample space for spare parts storage as well as four dive tanks/mounting brackets.

Forward of the galley is the master stateroom. To port is a custom, queen-sized bed, flanked by two bed-side tables/cabinets. Beneath the bed are drawers and a large storage area for additional spares. Forward in this space is a large mirror, a full-sized bank of drawers and two large hanging lockers. There are also two wall-mounted ventilation fans, as well as a fan providing outside-air circulation. These fans augment the ample natural air flow from the three port side portholes and the ceiling vent hatch. To starboard is a remote controlled 32″ flat screen TV and the master bath, complete with granite counter tops and a full sized shower and tub.

Forward of the master, also accessible via the forward PH stairs, is a beam-to-beam, below decks spare parts storage area and a large hanging locker. The VIP stateroom has a double berth, large lockers and drawers and two large ventilation hatches. To starboard is an office area, with a mounted, swinging chair, desk and drawers. Forward is a full bath with granite counters, tile backsplash, drawers, large storage cabinets and another ventilation hatch. Below deck is a full-headroom machinery and spare parts storage area.

One deck up from the salon is the high-tech pilothouse, complete with its extensive array of electronic systems and controls. The visibility from the oversized, high-back Stidd helm chair is fantastic. A notable and desirable feature of this PH is its custom, raised settee, which affords a commanding view of the seaway ahead. In addition to the screened doors and operable windows, two wall-mounted fans provide on-demand ventilation on windless days.

Aft of the PH, are a day-head, with granite countertops and a screened ventilation hatch, along with a captain’s cabin, complete with a double berth, shelves, drawers and a large locker. A wall-mounted fan adds ventilation to the large interior and exterior portholes.

Exterior spaces offer some excellent features. The cockpit has been redesigned to incorporate a spacious settee, with custom cushions and a fixed-mounted folding teak table. This converts the cockpit into a fantastic gathering place for entertaining, sundowners, or a quiet evening dinner with guests. The cockpit also has two reclining teak deck chairs that add to the enjoyment of this unique space. Two large storage lockers, a hot/cold outside shower and a large, motorized lazarette hatch complete this special space.

Aft of the cockpit is an oversized swim/dive platform, complete with a dive ladder and a full shore-power station. Below the swim platform is a custom-designed wave dampener that virtually eliminates the annoying wave ‘slam’ that can otherwise result from following seas or ill-timed boat traffic. Below the swim platform are three, blue-toned underwater lights that are very effective at lighting an evening swim area. or attracting small, curious fish.

The starboard side deck offers dock access and a protected walkway to the Portuguese bridge, a particularly well-protected area in front of the PH that effectively sheds even a rare blue-water visit. This area has two double door storage areas for power cords, mooring lines, hoses, plexi-glass storm windows, or most anything else that needs a home.

The foredeck is secured by robust stainless railings; and has an oversized windless and a 300 pound stainless anchor (for peace-of-mind if the unexpected squall hits your anchorage). Fitted to the railing are two, collapsible stainless fender storage brackets. There is also a full shore power station in the starboard foredeck bulkhead.

The tender deck is located two steps up from the port side-deck, and is also secured by oversized stainless railings. Outboard of these railings, on either side and aft, are fixed kayak/SUP brackets that securely retain your largest water toys. The tender deck itself is very large, thanks to the well thought-out design change that eliminated the steps from the cockpit. This affords the opportunity to carry an oversized tender (for visiting distant harbors), completely within the railings surrounding the tender deck. This 14 foot tender is launched by a hydraulic davit, that retreats to a position athwartships and aft of the tender. The tender deck also contains three custom fiberglass deck boxes, suitable for dry storage of such items as folding bikes, tender fuel, cleaning supplies, folding deck chairs, etc. Completing the tender deck equipment list is a hydrostatically launched, hard-cased life raft and a passarelle. A fresh-water hose fitting helps make clean-ups easy.

The flybridge has the very desirable hard-top upgrade. It is extensively equipped with navigation equipment, and outfitted with dual Stidd deck chairs, a starboard side settee and an forward-facing, full-sized settee and fiberglass table. Other features include a beam-to-beam, storage area under the helm console, a full-width storage area under both the large and small settees, a tall storage area in the stack, a gas grill, and a refrigerator. The FB also allows for access to the top of the hardtop, which contains four large solar panels and extensive electronic equipment.

The hull, which was freshly painted during the October 2017 annual haul-out, has several noteworthy features. In addition to the wave dampener, hydraulic bow/stern thrusters, hydraulic stabilizers and protected twin propellers and rudders, the keel configuration helps ensure reliable, straight-as-an-arrow tracking. The combination of keep design, twin engines and hydraulic thrusters helps make boat handling very precise. Cathexis requires no rudder assistance to confidently enter tight marinas, pull into narrow slips (even with only inches to spare on each side), turn on a dime in a thoroughfare, reliably back in a straight line, hold her along a dock during mooring, and depart from an along-side tie, between two other vessels, into the wind. You’ll never cruise a better designed, more easily handled couples trawler!

All in all, this is a very special yacht, proven through her world-wide cruising history. She is fully outfitted, and ready to safely and reliably afford her next owners a cruising lifetime of memorable experiences.

ACCOMMODATIONS

GENERAL

He was delivered in 2008, with a refit in 2014. Built with the utmost attention to detail for which the builder is renowned and meticulously maintained by an experienced owner and her professional crew, she is offered for sale in spotless condition.

He sleeps eight owners and guests in four ensuite staterooms. The double berth captain’s cabin is aft of the pilot house, and the crew cabin is aft of the engine room.

The yacht’s interior was originally designed by Dee Robinson Interiors, and features elegant American cherry woodwork with panels in eye catching book matched mahogany crotch, black absolute granite, custom color matched interior Dutch doors and window frames, and intricate stainless steel. In 2011 she received a $2 million reconfiguration with a fly bridge extension. The new arrangement included the interior sky lounge staircase being removed and an exterior aft staircase being added. The owner also added a waste treatment system and many redundant systems throughout.

Carefully cared for and under the direction of Destry Darr Designs, she was redecorated and refreshed in August 2014. This includes new carpet, new dining room chairs, new window treatments, all salon furniture recovered, new bed throws, new decorative pillows, new exterior chair cushions, new fly bridge sun pad cushions, new lampshades, refinished coffee tables and dining room table, recovered pilot house Stidd seat and back cushions and recovered sky lounge furnishings.

He has recently completed an extensive maintenance program which included the painting of the entire deckhouse and superstructure, servicing of the main engines, generators, air conditioning system and much more.

He represents a unique opportunity to own a spectacular yacht in perfect condition. She was designed and built to handle all oceans of the world from the tropics to high latitudes in comfort, style and safety. Her sumptuous interior and high volume offers the greatest luxury, and seems far more spacious than her overall length of 86’ would lead you to expect. She was built to ABS Class requirements, and has been maintained in class. She is commercially compliant, and can be offered for charter. Both rugged and refined, she must be inspected to fully appreciate all she has to offer. She will be the first choice for anyone looking for a model, easily maintained, and comprehensively equipped adventure yacht.

SALOON

Aft in the main deck superstructure, the main saloon has an appealing symmetry. Matching pair of blue-gray chenille upholstered settees are to port and starboard beneath the large windows. These face matching pen shell coffee tables, each flanked by matching taupe, geometric patterned upholstered arm chairs. This very convivial conversation space can seat ten people very comfortably.

A low cabinet forward conceals a flat panel television which rises at the touch of a button. This cabinet, with the service columns to each side, visually separates the saloon from the dining room. Below the nylon taupe carpet is a finished floor of teak and holly.

DINING

The dining table, set athwart ships at the yacht’s centerline, seats eight in new upholstered chairs and two carvers. A handsome butler’s counter is forward to port with custom cabinetry for all chinaware, two fridge drawers beneath a black absolute granite top, Icemaker, sink, wine cooler and a lighted crystal display cabinet above.

The galley, described in greater detail below, is forward to port. A very handsome half spiral staircase leads up to the pilothouse, and a day head is to starboard.

MASTER STATEROOM

Further forward and just a couple of steps down, the Master Stateroom spans the full beam of the yacht. A centerline king sized berth is against the aft bulkhead of this spectacular room. A television rises from the cabinet forward which is flanked by the doors to His and Hers bathrooms finished in white flecked marble, mahogany joinery work, and large stall showers (hers also being a steam shower), three closets, writing desk, built in book shelves and skylights.

CREW ACCOMMODATIONS

Captain’s Cabin:

Conveniently positioned just aft of the pilot house. A double berth is set outboard to port with a desk forward, and an ensuite bathroom with stall shower to starboard.

Crew Cabin:

Accessed via a staircase from the portside of the aft deck, the crew cabin is on the starboard side just aft of the engine room. The cabin has upper and lower single berths and an ensuite bathroom with stall shower.

Laundry:

Opposite the crew cabin with one new Electrolux washing machine and two Maytag Neptune dryers.

PILOTHOUSE

As expected, the pilothouse offers a commanding view, with all instruments properly laid out and described in greater detail below.

A raised C-shaped settee, aft on the centerline, faces a drop leaf table. A door to port leads to the captain’s cabin with double berth and ensuite bathroom. To starboard a corridor leads aft to the sky lounge passing fridge, Icemaker, sink and a lighted crystal display cabinet above.

SKY LOUNGE

Unlike her subsequent sisters and following its reconfiguration in 2011 VIVIERAE does not have a staircase to the fly bridge in this room. It consequently feels (and is) much more spacious with a charcoal chenille L-shaped settee to port providing a great spot to enjoy the scenery or watch a movie. A low cabinet aft conceals a flat panel television which rises at the touch of a button.

Within the cabinetry is custom wine storage, and a finished teak and holly floor is beneath the 100% wool carpet A foldable treadmill and selection of dumbbells quickly turns this area into a mini-gym.

GALLEY

On the main deck, forward and to port of the dining saloon, the galley has access to the port side deck in the conventional way. Finished in American cherry with grey granite counters and backsplash, this galley has everything a chef could want. Equipment includes:

Sub-Zero freezer and freezer

Sub-Zero refrigerator and refrigerator drawers

Bosch Dishwasher

Dacor Microwave oven (new)

Wolf Oven

Wolf Stove top (new)

Stainless steel sink with disposal

Breville Toaster

Monogram trash compactor

DECK & HULL

He is an “aft house” trawler with the superstructure set well back on the hull to provide the most comfortable ride in a pitching sea. This configuration provides ample space for large tenders in the well deck aft of the high bow, and forward of the Portuguese bridge.

There are side decks on both sides of the main deck and on the pilothouse deck, and a generous aft deck-cockpit with access to the integral swim platform. A straight bench settee with Sunbrella cushions across the transom facing a convertible dining table and four teak deck chairs for al fresco dining. All tables and chairs are quick release to make room for the Stidd fighting chair whilst game fishing.

Aft of the sky lounge the deck is sheltered by the overhang from the flybridge above. This overhang is a custom construction that is not shared by other Nordhavn 86’s. A stairway comes up from the cockpit below on the port side, and a similar and custom stairway on the starboard side leads up the flybridge.

FLYBRIDGE

This is very much an “owner & guest” area, since there is no command station. A hardtop stretches from the ventilation stacks forward shading the area, and there are tracks and removable Isinglass screens to enclose the space when the weather warrants. A C-shaped settee and table is forward to port. A large and useful barbeque grill, drinks fridge and 52” television finish the deck off for any type of entertaining.

Aft, only partially covered by the hard top, is a Jacuzzi with the panoramic view surrounded with a sumptuous new sunpad.

UNDERWATER CONFIGURATION

He has a bulbous bow for optimal fuel efficiency (the bow thruster is contained in this bulb), a full keel ending a few meters short of the stern, twin skegs enclosing the shafts with the rudders supported aft leaving the propellers protected within apertures, and a swim platform aft which is integral to the hull, and contains an inverted broad U-shaped tunnel with the stern thruster.

Stabilizers are just aft of amidships each side, and are fitted with kelp cutters.

The superstructure is in Alexseal Snow White, painted in August 2014.

ELECTRICAL

The AC electrical system is three phase 120/208 volt distribution with a maximum capacity of 60kW provided by two Northern Light generators (40kW and 25kW) which can be synched together (splitting the buss bars as oppose to paralleling), or through a 100 amp shore power connection (fed by a Glendenning Cable Master) through an Atlas shore power converter, allowing the yacht to be powered in any country in the world. The Atlas Shore Power Convertor has seamless transfer capability allowing the yacht to be unaffected when switching between power supplies.

The DC electrical systems is 24 volts with a capacity of 765 amp hours provided by six 8D Lifeline batteries connected in series/parallel charged by an Outback inverter/charger at 70 amps.

CONSTRUCTION

He is built in fiberglass to very heavy scantlings from female molds using an outer layer of gelcoat (although all finish surfaces are subsequently painted in Alexseal) and 2mm of Coremat to prevent “print through” before the first series of lamination of woven roving is applied. Vinylester resin is used in the first three layers below the waterline, and the entire underwater structure is coasted in five coats of epoxy resin before antifouling paint is applied.

Built to ABS Class requirements and has been maintained in class.

Longitudinal stringers (10 each side) are used full length for added rigidity, and there are five watertight bulkheads.

The superstructure cabin sides incorporate Klegecell foam coring, and all deck structures use Baltec vertical end grain balsa coring to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Further, 30,000 lbs. of lead ballast is built into the keel structure, and an additional 4,000 lbs. is used in trim.

Fuel storage tanks and water tanks are also built in fiberglass with inspection hatches and removable baffles for full access if needed.

Teak decking, glued, not screwed, sheaths the main deck, the pilothouse deck, and the flybridge.

All machinery spaces are lined with Soundown lead foam insulation and 3M Thinsulate to prevent noise propagation.

Nordhavn 76 (2009) for sale

With popularity of the “northwest trawler”-style boat on the rise, PAE set out to create a new, big modern passagemaker that fused this salty look with the advanced systems of the latest Nordhavns. The result was the Nordhavn 76: developed for those yachtsmen who want an aft pilothouse boat which carries its shore boats on the foredeck. Like our venerable Nordhavn 62, the pilothouse of the N76 is set aft, carries its crane forward and can launch its shore boats off either the port or starboard side. Based on the hull form and specifications of the N72, the simple goal of this new model was to create a small superyacht which was true to the rugged ocean going heritage of other Nordhavns while at the same time stunning in her elegance, fit and finish, systems and engineering.

This Nordhavn is located in Fort Lauderdale, contact us at 514-521-1221 for all details.
